WHO IS A REFUGEE?

A refugee is someone who has fled one's home country and cannot return because of a well-founded fear of persecution based on religion, race, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group.

THE REFUGEE CRISIS

  • About 105,000 refugees are resettled annually from underdeveloped countries to more developed countries; including about 70,000 accepted by the US.

  • The vast majority resettle in neighboring countries in refugee camp.

  • Refugees typically face a life of hardship among the lower class working for a living trying to create a better life than the one they left.

  • Parents typically speak little English so usually the kids are doing the talking; which creates more barriers when kids don't understand the legality of what they're doing.

  • The relocation process is similar regardless of the circumstance for which they are moving.

  • Kids live separated from parents while the process is being started; lots of struggles come from trying to acclimate to a new culture / society.

  • They have the opportunity for success but have to work relatively hard for it.
