WHO IS A REFUGEE?
A refugee is someone who has fled one's home country and cannot return because of a well-founded fear of persecution based on religion, race, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group.
THE REFUGEE CRISIS
About 105,000 refugees are resettled annually from underdeveloped countries to more developed countries; including about 70,000 accepted by the US.
The vast majority resettle in neighboring countries in refugee camp.
Refugees typically face a life of hardship among the lower class working for a living trying to create a better life than the one they left.
Parents typically speak little English so usually the kids are doing the talking; which creates more barriers when kids don't understand the legality of what they're doing.
The relocation process is similar regardless of the circumstance for which they are moving.
Kids live separated from parents while the process is being started; lots of struggles come from trying to acclimate to a new culture / society.
They have the opportunity for success but have to work relatively hard for it.
