Eagles Open 25th Anniversary Season with Open Cup Victory
Charlotte, NC – The Charlotte Eagles began the 2017 season with a 2-0 victory in the First Round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup on Wednesday night. Goals from Kelvin Omondi and Joao Costa in the second half propelled the hosts to a second-round Open Cup matchup with fellow Queen City residents the Charlotte Independence.
The game started off a frantic pace as both sides challenged the opposing goalkeepers early. Andrew Revanales, who would leave the match with an injury in the 23rd minute had a couple opportunities on balls played in over the top of the Chattanooga defense but Chattanooga goalkeeper Paulo Pita was there to make the stop each time to keep the game scoreless.
Chattanooga tested Eagles goalkeeper James Pyle in the 21st minute but the North Carolina Tar Heel was up to the task with a diving stop to his right to deny the visitors the opening goal.
Both teams would enter the break looking for their first goal and the hosts would eventually find it in the 71st minute. With Revanales off injured Brazilian Joao Costa would create the games first goal. Taking the ball down the right hand side Costa would send a ball across the goal mouth and it would deflect off the post and into the path of Kelvin Omondi for the game’s first goal. Omondi, a Kenyan from John Brown University, scored 15 goals for the Golden Eagles this fall.
Costa wasn’t done getting involved in the action as he doubled Charlotte’s advantage in the 89th minute to seal the victory. Costa collected the ball and beat Pita from a tight angle on the left side of the box to open his Charlotte Eagles account.
The Eagles are back home on Saturday, May 13th to open PDL league play as the Wilmington Hammerheads come to town. They will then turn around and play the Charlotte Independence in 2nd Round US Open Cup action on Wednesday, May 17th. Both matches are at Charlotte Christian School and will kick off at 7 pm.
Keep that Orange Flag Flying High and we’ll see you on Saturday!
